China Career Expectations

In the most recent PISA assessment (OECD, 2017), 15-year-old students from Macao, Hong Kong, and B-S-J-G regions were surveyed about their science career expectations. B-S-J-G (China) refers to the four PISA-participating municipalities/provinces in China: Beijing, Shanghai, Jiangsu and Guangdong. In all of these three groups, a lower percentage of girls compared to boys have expectations to work as science and engineering professionals. More specifically, the likelihood of boys expecting to have careers as scientists and engineers is highest among Macao students, such that boys from Macao are about 3.2 times more likely to have these science career expectations than their female peers. This likelihood is even higher than the one represented by the average response of students from OECD countries.
